Meet our new Program Assistant

Oh, hi there, Adventurers!

My name is Meghan McAfee, and I am excited to call myself the Creative Youth Center’s new Program Assistant.

About a year ago, I was asked to lead creative writing workshops and have been working with students from Cook Arts Center, West Michigan Refugee Education and Cultural Center, GVSU’s TRiO program, and Congress Elementary. (The Congress kids even wrote a chapbook—Even a Table, Even an Elephant.) Previously, I volunteered with the Press Club and the workshops at Baxter Community Center.

I come to you fresh out of a 10.5-month AmeriCorps term with the Heart of West Michigan United Way’s Schools of Hope program. During that time, I served roughly 45 students in in-school and after-school programs, to increase their literacy rates, enabling them to read at grade level.

Now, I will be sharing the helm of the Thrive tutoring program and the Afterschool Adventure program with Katie Caralis, Program Director, and I hope to meet a few of you while you’re volunteering.

Maybe, together, we can convince Captain H. Tanny to let us tag along on a few adventures…
