Ever wonder about the volunteers that help make the CYC’s programs a huge success? Every week, Grand Rapidians donate their time and talents to our various programs. Sasha Smith volunteers on Wednesdays and Thursdays in the Afterschool Adventure Program. Here’s what he had to say about his experience:
Q: What’s your favorite part about volunteering at the CYC?
A: By far the best part of volunteering is watching the kids grow up and learn valuable life skills. Also, free snacks.*
Q: What was your favorite book growing up and why?
A: My favorite book growing up was probably Alexander And The Magic Mouse. I loved the illustrations and I could relate to the crocodile crying in the rain.
Q: If you were Captain H. Tanny’s first mate, where would you adventure next?
A: It’s funny you should ask! The Captain and I have recently been commissioned by the Arch-Duke of Lichtenstein to recover a stolen art collection from the royal museum. The thieves are believed to be hiding in the Canary Islands. The Captain and I will sail to Tenerife, and then sneak into their stronghold atop mount Teide to recover the stolen art. So we have that to look forward to.
Q: What’s one piece of advice you’d give to young adventurers everywhere?
A: I would tell young adventurers to always look around you; some people only see what’s in front of them but if you look around, you might find that there’s a lot more going on than you ever believed was possible.
On behalf of Captain H. Tanny and adventurers everywhere, thanks Mr. Sasha!
